Store Manager - Peter Davis

Like a lot of people I left school with no real idea of what I wanted to pursue as a career. I have always been mad about anything with an engine or wheels and whilst I considered my future, I started working for Halfords as a way of earning some money within a store that sold products I knew about.

As it happened I really enjoyed working within the team environment and to top it off, I really got a kick out of helping the customers that came into the store. So, after some advice I decided to stay and develop a career in retailing.

I am now a Store Manager, the job is hectic at times which requires me to be excellent at planning and have really good communication skills, it's a busy environment which can change rapidly, but hugely rewarding. Maintaining focus is important for our team, delivering superior results and having a passion for our customers, whilst having a clear understanding of the bigger picture to deliver our part of the business strategy.

For a year I took a break from store life and worked instead on various projects at Head Office. This was rewarding and challenging and gave me a great opportunity to work closely with people at different levels and provide a Store Managers perspective.

Learning new skills quickly has been important and putting theory into practice from the learning I gained at Manchester Metropolitan University in 1998 which Halfords supported me in has given me even more insight into our organisation and how it comes to life.

The environment I work in is fast paced, highly focused and we have fun.

The sheer variety of my job means, there's no chance to get bored and I am always in a position to make a difference. I really do feel valued here.
