I actually joined Halfords when I was 16, many years ago. Halfords were opening a new out of town superstore in the town I lived in so I worked part-time in Halfords for two years throughout my sixth form education. I went off to uni and stuck with Halfords and then at the end of my university education I joined Halfords on the Graduate Scheme in 2008.
I look after In-Car Technology. That comprises of dash cams, satnavs, car audio, and mobile phone accessories. In addition to that I also look after Halfords for Business, who are our team of people who liaise with other businesses and sell products and services to them.
The best thing about working for Halfords is that everyone in the business works towards the same goals and everyone works together to help us achieve them.
There’s an awful lot of challenges in retail but one which we face very often is cost pressures coming particularly from the Far East. We often have to work with our suppliers very closely to mitigate those as much as possible and ensure we’re not passing on any costs to our consumers.
There’s lots of training and development available at Halfords and one of the things I’m most impressed with is the fact that it’s available to everyone across the business. In my role, I’ve done training on negotiation, coaching, and presentation skills – to name a few!
The achievement I’m most pleased about is the development of people I’ve worked with in my teams. Several people who have worked in my teams have gone and got themselves promoted or moved on within the business and that’s what I’m most proud about.
To anyone applying I would say that Halfords is a great business with lots of career opportunities, lots of opportunity to learn and develop and it’s quite a big business but has a family feel to it.
