Retail Management Graduate

You never know what to expect from one day to the next, which means no day is boring.

The questions on everyone's lips

  • There’s a lot of employers out there... What made you choose us?

I chose the Halfords Retail Grad Scheme because of the opportunity to spend time both in store and at the Support Centre and also because of all the training, which other grad schemes do not offer.

  • Tell us a bit about your role…

I'm on the Graduate Scheme so my role is really varied. The first year of the scheme is very structured. You spend the first 16 weeks of the scheme in store in Bike Hut then a couple of weeks at the Support Centre with the Bike Hut team, and then the same for Auto. You also get the opportunity to spend a longer amount of time working at the Support Centre. The second year you spend time in store putting what you’ve learnt into practice as an Assistant Manager with the hope of becoming Store Manager of your own store at the end of that year.

  • What do you get up to on a typical day?

There is no typical day as every day is different! In store not one day is the same as the next, as every day you face different challenges. However, you often spend time out of store. At least half my first month at Halfords was spent elsewhere as there’s always so much going on! So far I’ve been to the Auto Conference, where I was introduced to lots of new products, the Store Manager away day for my area, lots of training courses, and I have so much more planned for the next couple of months.

  • What’s the best thing about working here?

I really enjoy working at Halfords! It’s challenging but very rewarding. You never know what to expect from one day to the next, which means no day is boring.

  • What challenges have you faced and how did you deal with them?

My biggest challenge has been keeping track of what I’ve got going on each week so I definitely recommend getting a good diary!

  • Tell us about the training and development...

Halfords offers so much training and development for all colleagues, with both online and face to face courses. On the Graduate Scheme you’ll get involved in all of this and more! Graduates also have both Halfords mentors and external mentors who help with everything along the way and make sure I’m doing everything necessary to keep on track of the final goal of becoming management.

  • What's been your biggest achievement?

For me the practical part of the role at Halfords was definitely the most daunting so I’m very proud to now be able to fit bulbs, wiper blades, batteries, roof bars and much more!

  • What do you think makes someone successful at Halfords?

To be successful at Halfords I think you have to be driven, a team player and able to have fun!

  • And, to anyone thinking about applying, what would you tell them?

Go for it! You will not be disappointed!
