We invest in our Centre Managers’ development through the Leadership Programme. Centre Managers get the opportunity to focus on key leadership skills and how they implement this in the workplace. Thought provoking and practical, the programme supports our managers to be the leaders of the future.
Ensuring we have the right people in place, across the UK, with the right skills, is essential to maintaining our reputation for excellent customer service. It’s also key to motivating and retaining good people who want to do a great job and get on.
So we’ve developed a culture of continuous learning focused on improving the skills of our technicians.
We’re one of the few employers who are able to offer every technician a training pathway to becoming an MOT Tester – and we can deliver the whole pathway via our four bespoke Training Academies.
And as you improve, so too does your earning potential. We pay a Learning & Development supplement which increases with every TGA point that our Technicians earn.
We’ve been working with the IMI and the DVSA to develop qualifications and training for MOT Testers. We’re now the only private company to deliver this training alongside hybrid training.
In 2016, 70 Autocentre colleagues took the course and all qualified.
We’re investing heavily in our Technicians’ development spending £2.5 million in the last year alone. That includes the opening of four new purpose-built training academies in Basingstoke, Northampton, Bolton and Halifax. We’ve also partnered with the IMI and the DVSA to develop new qualifications and training for MOT Testers.
We’ve also taken the time to grade each one of our 1,200 Technicians, ensuring everyone is on the right salary for their skill level. This process has also enabled us to identify each person’s specific training needs, so everyone can see their training pathway.
All colleagues have access to the Training Hub and any course they wish to complete.
Our Quality and Training team assesses each of our Technicians from semi-skilled to master Technician, at levels T1, T2, T3 and T4.
They look at your current qualifications, driving licence and the type of work you’re doing regularly. They may also ask you to complete some practical tests.
They’ll then set your grade to reflect your skills and experience, ensure you are on the right salary, and guide your further development.
Further development includes more training in technical, administration or customer service, helping you to develop your career with Halfords Autocentres in the most appropriate way. As you increase your skills and experience, your salary will increase, ensuring all our colleagues are striving to be the very best they can be.
Your development starts from day one. A member of the Quality and Training team will be here to welcome you. They’ll begin your induction using our bespoke workbook and introduce you to our learning management system, The Hub.
This will give you an overview of your terms and conditions, health and safety and our administration processes.
In the first week we’ll help and guide you to ensure you have a full understanding of your role.
You’ll also complete a short, practical test to begin your Technical Grading Assessment. This will continue over your first 12 weeks to ensure you are on the correct Technician grade and salary. We’ll help you throughout with regular reviews to ensure you’re on track.
Once you’ve completed your probationary period, you’ll then be able to look at creating a development plan that guides your ongoing career development.
