Move up a gear as a Customer Service Advisor

All our in-store colleagues can take advantage of the Gears Apprenticeship Programme, a multi-level training programme, with one-to-one coaching, that goes from the basics to more advanced and specialist knowledge. Moving through Gears 1-3 also offers the opportunity to enhance your pay – so the immediate rewards are excellent too.

At Halfords we invest a lot of time, resource and money into developing our colleagues because we know that it means that we will have engaged and motivated people who want to give our customers a great service experience. We want to ensure that colleagues develop skills that will help them throughout their career journey and so we run our training as an Apprenticeship Programme so that all of the great learning our colleagues complete gives them an industry recognised qualification and structured learning that is monitored by external bodies to that they can be sure that we are continuously improving.

How our Gears Apprenticeship Programme works

In Gear 1 (your first three months), you’ll be guided through:

  • Induction
  • Health & Safety
  • General overview of the shop, how it runs on a daily basis and basic duties
  • Cover the basics of Auto, Leisure and Bikes
  • You’ll do an exam at the end with your Store Manager
  • When you pass, you’ll get a supplement on your pay.

Gear 2 will explore:

  • Your specialism choice between Auto and Bikes
  • Bikes – Pre-delivery Inspection Training, Bike Repairs, Workshops and E-Learning
  • Auto – Auto Awareness, Child Safety, Fitting Service and E-Learning
  • When you complete Gear 2, · you’ll complete an End Point Assessment which, on passing means you gain a Retail Level 2 Standard (an industry recognised qualification) and another pay supplement.

Following the completion of your Gears Apprenticeship Programme you may be selected to complete Gear 3.

Gear 3 is available in specific stores where opportunities exist to specialise:

  • Become a shop technician in Auto or Bikes
  • You will be nominated to do Gear 3 by your Store Manager or Area Manager
  • When completed, you’ll move into a Cycle Tech or Auto Tech role
  • When you complete Gear 3, you’ll get a pay supplement.

Leadership & Management Development Programmes

Whether you’re already in management or want to make the leap, our leadership and management development programmes can get you to where you want to be.

Our three core development programmes take leaders on a journey, from introducing them to the basics of good leadership and refining and developing these essential skills at each new level.

  • Aspire is a 12 month Apprenticeship programme for those keen to get into management from retail, and covers personal effectiveness and leadership, recruitment, employee relations, customer insight, marketing and commerciality.
  • Accelerate is for Existing Store Manager's and is made up of a series of Bite Size Development programmes, Store Manager's are able to select from a suite of options to support them with their developments, examples of these bite size sessions are as follows: 
     
    • Planning and organising

    • Commercial Awareness
    • How to do a great appraisal review
    • How to drive performance through great conversations
    • ER
    • Recruitment and Selection
    • Communicate to engage for the facilitators
       
  • Inspire enables The Exec and Leadership Group colleagues to sharpen their leadership skills, understand the business even better, and master their ability to influence, present, coach and mentor.
