I was looking for an opportunity to work with bicycles which I’ve done for years and the opportunity arose at Halfords for me to come in and be their Technician…so I took it with both hands!
I come into work and assess the work I’ve got in, prioritising it to make sure the important jobs get done first and then I set to it, open the toolbox and go!
There’s lots of good things about working for Halfords. The team and the staff are great, always ready to have a laugh. Obviously, customers come first but we always have a good laugh when we’re working.
I’ve faced loads of challenges – there’s always a new challenge every day. It’s what makes the job interesting! Generally, I have a go and if I can’t figure it out there will be a workmate somewhere who will come along and offer some ideas. Between us, we’ll get it.
Training and development opportunities always exist - from the online training with the Gears programme all the way through to the offsite programmes. I did a Technician course earlier this year, I’ve done various bits and pieces on sales, and there’s always more to do.
It’s hard to say because there’s been quite a few. It was nice to have a group of managers in one day with the Area Manager to show them how to run a workshop successfully and pass the knowledge on!
Willingness to learn, eagerness, enthusiasm, basically come in with an open mind and somebody will find something to go in there!
Do it! Go for it. You don’t know what exists over that horizon until you try but get in there and have a go.
